Centre for Organismal Studies (COS) Heidelberg

Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg

Research in COS deals with experimental and computational analysis at multiple levels of biological organisation, from the organism to the molecule. System wide experimental approaches comprise functional genomics, advanced imaging, electrophysiology and computational biology to address key questions in neurobiology, stem cell biology, analysis and modelling of biochemical processes and evolution.

Hydra and Nematostella, evolutionarily ancient model systems, are studied in the Department of Molecular Evolution and Genomics to address the evolution of signalling pathways in the context of stem cells, neural development and the establishment of the bilaterian body plan.

The regulation on the transcriptional, cellular and organ level is the overarching focus of research in the Department of Molecular Development and Physiology using medaka and zebrafish as the model system.

The Department of Molecular Physiology studies the molecular mechanisms employed by sensory neurons to translate
